Darts tournament planning

How to run a darts tournament at your pub

Choose a format that fits your boards and available time, publish clear rules, control registration and make it easy for players to understand the draw and current results.

The short answer

Build the tournament around the boards and time available

  1. Choose round robin, team round robin or knockout.
  2. Estimate how many matches the available boards can handle.
  3. Publish the darts and tournament rules before play.
  4. Close registration before creating the draw.
  5. Record every completed match in one official result list.
  6. Keep players informed and announce the final winner.

The physical board availability limits simultaneous play, so capacity and format should be decided together rather than separately.

Choose a format that matches the purpose of the night

Individual round robin

Each player meets every other player. It gives people multiple matches but the fixture count grows as the field grows.

Team round robin

Named teams play each other once. Agree team membership and how the team match is scored before registration closes.

Knockout

Winners progress towards a final. It is simple to explain and reduces the field as the event continues.

Other tournament systems exist, but PubPlay supports these three Darts competition formats. It does not run double elimination, Swiss or season-long leagues. Use the format comparison to check match counts and practical trade-offs.

Estimate capacity from real board availability

Count the boards that can be used safely at the same time, then consider how long your chosen match format tends to take in this venue. Allow time for calling players, entering results, breaks and a final that people can watch.

There is no universal number of entrants for a pub darts night. A round robin creates more matches than a knockout with the same field, and a team event may take a different amount of time again. Set a registration limit only after considering those constraints.

Set the rules, then register the field

Define the darts game, match format, who throws first, how ties or disputes are resolved and how a winner progresses. Explain who records the official result. PubPlay does not replace these game rules.

Registration can use a paper list, advance booking or a digital join flow. Check names, remove duplicates and confirm teams before closing the field. With PubPlay, players scan a QR or enter a join code in a browser; they do not install the host app.

Create fixtures and run each physical match

Once registration closes, create the round-robin fixtures or knockout bracket. Call the relevant players and board using the venue's own process. The competitors then play the darts match physically under the announced rules.

Record the completed match result against the correct players or teams. Check both sides before saving. PubPlay updates supported standings or knockout progression from those official match results; it does not assign boards or referees.

Keep the draw visible, then close the event properly

Tell players where to find their next match and which results are official. A noticeboard or announcements may suit a small field. PubPlay can also show current fixtures, results and standings on a browser-connected TV.

When every required result is complete, check the final table or bracket, announce the winner, finish the event and retain the archive. The archive is an event record, not a permanent darts ranking or league system.
